On 10th of March is scheduled the postponed trial of 12 students of
Physics department of University of Crete who are prosecuted by their
teachers since the fall of 2011. The students were sentenced two
years ago by the disciplinary board of the university, which met
secretly violating any academic regulation, resulting most of the
students losing one semester of their studies.
The
students now are sent to criminal courts by their own teachers with
accusations such as “illegal restraint”
and attempt of unlawful violence. It's the first time this happens in
Greece since the military dictatorship of 1967-1974!
What was the terrible “crime” they committed? In fall of 2011
rose up along with the entire academic community against a memorandum
law-“freak” of then education minister Anna Diamantopoulou.
Although the legislation has encountered a fair reaction by both
students and professors, the teachers of Physics department
differentiated from the beginning with articles in the press:
“Memorandum concerns a series of necessary reforms, the
universities must be rehabilitated with private-enterprise criteria,
demonstrations against government measures have no meaning.
The
case of 12 is not a “criminal” but clearly a political trial. On
trial are not put only the 12 students. On 10th
of March the Republic itself is tried. The struggles of young people
for a better life are tried. In the place of the 12 could be any
young person who is struggling to live in his country with dignity
and ever democratic citizen fighting for his rights!
Hands off Democracy!
We demand the definitive acquittal of the 12 students.

Chiediamo l'assoluzione
definitiva dei 12 studenti.
